A rulebook for food supplements from Ministry of Health

About half of the Italian population uses food supplements but not always consciously. That's why the Ministry of Health has compiled a useful rulebook for consumers:

1) Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet (which, in general, provides all the nutrients the body needs)

2) Supplements are not "compensate" the improper eating habits but facilitate regular body functions

3) Speal with your doctor in case of treatment with other medicines or supplements, or if the product is intended for infants and women who are pregnant / breastfeeding

4) Do not take supplements for longer periods without consulting your doctor, if you use them in case of "chronically floating" body conditions (for example, blood pressure or cholesterol level in the blood)

5) In the event of unexpected side effects, stop taking supplements

6) Always read the entire label: information about use and storage, ingredients, properties and warnings

7) Do not take food supplements in doses higher than those indicated on the label

8) To reduce overweight and dispose of excess fat, the use of a supplement is beneficial but accessory. The key is to reduce calories intake and increase energy expenditure through physical activity

9) When you take a supplement, consider your lifestyle and your actual needs

10) Beware of products advertised as "miraculous". Rather, change your habits, to make supplements safe and physiologically useful.
